Business and motorsport pays off for Cloud Cover Racers

Cloud Cover IT has been supporting companies' IT infrastructure needs for 20 years, firstly under the umbrella of Lance Gauld, and five years ago rebranded as Cloud Cover IT.

Because of their involvement in motorsport, a significant number of their clients have come from references linked to the sport. It has been a superb way for the company to reach out to business communities both in Scotland and the UK.

In 2015 one of Lance's colleagues, David Gebbie came to him looking to get into Motor Racing so a deal was done for 2016 to have Lance Gauld and Alasdair Gauld drive his Porsche Cayman race car under Cloud Cover IT's banner. The car is a production based Porsche Cayman with everything stripped out to a bare shell, a roll cage fitted, race seat, fuel tank and plastic body panels to save weight. The brakes were updated to 911 GT3 Cup spec as were hubs and engine.

OPG Graphics in Lesmahagow then did a fantastic job making it look awesome with badging on it from Cloud Cover IT, Microsoft, Office 365, Forth Valley Chamber of Commerce, 3M, Dunlop, Palazzo Kitchens, amongst others who have either helped financially or helped promote  the fact they are out there waving the flag for Scotland across the UK.

Finally, they were ready to trial on the track at Donington Park in June, and then at the end of July the car was all set up and the drivers all keyed up to perform. The track was Croft in the North of England and the Cloud Cover drivers were confident they could try for a class win.

As it turned out, rain fell at the start of the one hour race and from expecting a midfield final position, they shot through to the lead within eight laps which they never lost.

The team are hoping to race at Oulton Park (depending on budget as ever with motorsport) and then Knockhill, with a night race at Brands Hatch to finish the season off in November.

When not racing, the car is used by Cloud Cover for clients and friends to show it at exhibitions, and we will be taking people for passenger runs at Knockhill in the new year if anyone is interested in getting involved in it or in any other projects with Cloud Cover IT. We are always interested in talking about IT and your company's needs as well as our motorsport exploits!
